Research - Sound - Mr smith

Sound

What is sound and why is it important in micro- element?
sound are used in films to create a understanding for the audience and to create more meaning about the character and their emotions. Sound is also used to create a response for the audience. Sound is important in the micro-element because without sound the film wouldn't be understood by the audience and the concept of the film would be change.

Sound examples

Diegetic sound: Sound, which is part of the film world e.g. dialogue, music from a radio or jukebox. The sound can be on or off screen. (characters can hear)
Non diegetic: Sound which is not part of the film world. e.g. soundtrack, sound effects, voice overs. (characters cannot hear)

On screen sound: You can physically see where the sound is coming from. (radio and car)

Off screen sound: You can hear the sound but you cannot see  where it is coming from, but make sense to the film world. (Traffic and door knocking)

Parallel sound: The sound you can hear in a film is what is expected e.g a scene with children playing on a beach. Parallel sounds would be laughter, taking and the sound of the water from the sea.

Contrapuntal: the sound does not match the expectations of what you are viewing an example of this is jaws. The scenes of the beach are accompanied by the contrapuntal sound of the theme tune 'dur dur' which does not fit in with the happy images.

Thriller scene analysis

In the opening of scream the phone rings which is a on screen sound because the audience can see where the sound is coming from therefore when the female victim is talking to the antagonist on the phone it is a contrapuntal sound because the audience does not expect a dog to bark and because the dog barks it creates tension and makes the audience jump because it is unexpected.

conclusion
i have researched and understood how the sounding in films work. When I do my own thriller movie I now know what kind of sounds i should use and how different sounds create different feelings. Therefore, I will be using on and off sounds for examples when a character is running you can hear they're breathing which is an on screen sound. I will also include diegetic sound when the sound is coming from the radio

  1. A good post, you've clearly understood the different types of sound used and a nice example.

Couple of smaller mistakes to improve:
    - Common grammar mistakes, re-read your work to check it always makes sense
    - Conclusion - What types of sounds are you going to use rather than just 'I know about sounds' ( also watch out for capital letters i/I )
