Narrative themes

What are themes? Why are they important to identify for the audience? 

 Prominent or reoccurring idea in a film. Therefore an idea which is often repeated in a piece or art or literature/ narrative.  Themes need to be apparent throughout the film and can help draw the appropriate emotion from the audience. It is important because the audience need to know what they are watching. Not only are themes essential in film they are also virtually important in other media industries such as TV shows and music.

How are themes dependent on genres and why?

Themes are dependent on genres because it allows the audience to know what to expect and it also allows the directors to know exactly what to include in there films. Each genre has its own conventional set of themes that they might draw upon.

Different themes and examples: 
Action genre: violence, good vs evil, 
Thriller genre: Drugs, money, murder, kidnap, violence, religion.
Horror genre: death, murder, violence and weapons
Crime genre: violence and weapons, death, money, drug use and murder. 
War genre: violence and weapons, death, 
Romantic comedy genre: Relationships, separation, divorce, wedding, family
Action adventure genre: Ransom, corruption, disaster, good vs evil

common themes in thrillers and the impact the themes have on the audience

The common themes in thrillers are; violence, abuse, rape, crime, psychological, medical, conspiracy, super natural, religions and good vs evil. In thriller these themes are common because the audience should feel scared and the tension should be built. This makes the audience want to watch more and allows them to enjoy the film. These themes make the thriller film exciting and leaves the audience feeling satisfied.

Conclusion

By doing this post I now have an idea of what kind of themes I will use in my future thriller video. The themes that I will be using is crime, abuse, violence and weapons because  these are conventional to the thriller genre.
