Editing
What is editing and why is it important in films?
Editing describes the relationship between shots and the process by which they are combined. Film editing remarks a film and makes it better and adds emotion such as fade to black creates a chilling response. Edit is important in film because without edit the films wouldn't be able to flow from one shot to the other and the film would be confusing for the audience to understand. Editing allows the audience to understand the whole film and also editing makes the film professional and high quality. Therefore, Editing includes emotion in the film such as tension, disturbing and fear.
Film trailers
Editing takes a huge part in film trailers. Film trailers are an excellent way in connecting a audience to a film. Film trailers mainly use a mixture of editing techniques such as straight cut, fade to black, wipe cut, dissolve, fast editing, 180 degrees ruler, shot reverse shot, jump cut and also montage.Film trailers advertise the film this means the good parts in the film will be put in small scenes in the trailer to catch the audiences attention.
Straight cut
straight cut is when one shot moves into another shot in an edit and it does not confuse the audience. A straight cut has been used in 0.19 seconds when the inspector finds out what's in the box then the shot immediately changes to the detective that is with the antagonist. This allows the audience to understand that detective Somerset isn't able to tell detective mills what was inside the box because he is far away from the antagonist and detective Mills therefore detective Somerset also doesn't tell detective Mills because if he does the antagonists will achieve his plan.
Fade to black and reaction shot
fade to black is when one shot moves into another and a black filter is in between. In the clip fade in black has been used in 1 minute 10 seconds. The audience reaction to this will be a chilling reaction because the audience will be worrying about the female victim and the other children watching the female victim. A reaction shot is when any shot (often used as a cut away) in which a subject reactions to a previous shot. Therefore, a reaction shot has also taken place in the clip this happens when the female victim is coming down the stairs and when she pass by the mirror she sees the grudge( 7 minutes). This reaction shot messes with the audiences mind because this makes them feel uncomfortable because they do not know whats going to happen next to the women victim and the audiences will be waiting for a protagonist to help the female victim out.
Dissolve
when one shot disintegrates into another shot. In this clip the antagonist is talking to them selves. The antagonist fades into a skeleton which gives a chilling response to the audience and the audience will be left with questions in they're mind because they do not know what happens to the antagonist after.
slow editing and montage
Is when clips are put together at a normal pace and this is to create fluency. In the beginning of the clip the male victims reactions are very slow this highlights that something is going to pop up. Therefore, while the male victim is getting attacked the editing is slow to create tension in the film so the audience would see what the antagonist is doing to the male victim and this would make the audience feel sorry for the male victim. Montage is been also used in this clip. A montage is the speed of editing where shots are quickly juxtaposed together to create excitement. The montage takes place when the pace becomes fast when the antagonist is still attacking the victim and the victim is trying to protect them selves.
Imagine a hypothetical line is drawn between two or more actors. The camera must not shoot on the other side of the line and this is because it can confuse the audience and also the shooting will not be consistent.
Slow motion
Slow motion makes the audience feel relaxed but this also creates the audience feel disturbed because they will also feel as if something is going to happen. Even though slow motion is taking place it needs to flow with the film and makes it look realistic.
conclusion
Now that i have researched about the editing techniques i have developed a clear understanding that different techniques have different impact on the way the audience feel. Therefore, the editing techniques are important because it makes the film more interesting. However, I will be using fade to black and slow editing because believe that they will cause tension and make the audience disturbing because they would be expecting something to either pop up or something disturbing to happen.
This is a good post where you demonstrate your understanding of editing techniques. The definitions and examples you choose are well selected and analysed well.
ReplyDeleteTo improve;
In your introduction, think about how editing can impact an audience and how it is used to signify the action on screen. Can link to the Psycho shower scene here
-slow motion?
-in your conclusion, state which examples you plan to use and why
I have included what impact editing has on the audience.
ReplyDeleteI have included the examples that I will be using and I have explained why I will be using them.
And I have included slow motion.
