Mise en scene: lighting and colour

What is lighting?
Lighting helps to convey mood and atmosphere. It can be used to guide the audiences attention to a particular object, person, emotion or gesture. lighting creates more meaning than we think.

Key terms (angles of lighting)

Under lighting: light comes from below the person. This tends to have a distorting effect on the character.

Top lighting: light comes from above, highlighting the features of the character this gives a glamorous look.

Back lighting: light source is behind the person. If little or no light is used.

Key terms of type of lighting

Low key: The lighting is dark with small areas of light which also creates shadow.

High key: lighting appears more natural and realistic to our eyes. The lighting effect is heightened.

What is colour?
Colour in scenes have different connotations to them and can give different interpretations of the scenes. the colour makes the scene film more realistic and it gives the audience the idea of what the film is about such as if we see red blood straight comes into the audiences mind and this makes the audience think something that's got to do with blood is going to happen such as a attack or crime scene.

yellow/green lighting

yellow/green lighting represents that something tense is going to happen or something with a great impact is going happen. The lighting in the picture is  back lighting because the light source is behind the female protagonist/

blue and red lighting

The lighting from this scene highlights that something tense has taken place and protagonist has solved the problem out. Therefore the colours also represent that there is more action and tension to come. The lighting is placed on top of the protagonist because you can see everything around it and this shows us that all the hard work has finished and it has became a happy ending. The connotation of the colours makes the audience feel loyal and it makes the audience trust the character in the film.

Lighting in this scene "moon in the gutter" create tension. In the beginning of the scene we see the colour red covering the colour white this shows us that either someone's going to get attacked or crime is going to take place. The main colours that have been used it white and red and the colour white represents someone as being innocent and clean hearted therefore red represents danger and death. In the scene low key has been used because  there are a lot of shadows in the scene and only small parts of the scene has light this shows tension. Low key lighting has a

conclusion
when i create my own thriller i would use as many lighting souses as i am able to do because lighting makes a film look more interesting and it makes the scene look professional.

  1. Some good ideas here. The definitions are well written and some good examples and their connotations are referred to.

    To improve;
-Batman example, colour is blue and red. Think about the connotations this adds to the scene
-what response does the low key lighting have on the audience in 'The Moon and the Gutter?
-provide some examples of lighting types and angles with some analysis earlier in your post.
-conclude with some examples of lighting and colour you plan to use
