Narrative theory
what is narrative theory and why is it important to audiences?
Narrative theory is the out line of the story; the beginning, middle and end. Narrative theory is important to the audience because it allows the audience to know what's going on in the film.
creating meaning in text: The four elements that allow the audience to find the meaning of a film is; character, narrative stages, structure and semiology within narrative. Therefore each element provide different meaning to the audience such as character allows the audience to know who has what role such as antagonist, protagonist, and victim. Narrative stages allows the film to flow with the film and have a good understanding of the film. Structure and semiology allow the audience to feel what the characters feel.
Propp's character theory ;
Propp developed a character theory;
Propp developed a character theory;
The villain (struggles against the hero)
The donor (prepares the hero or gives the hero a object)
The helper (helps the hero)
The princess (person the hero marries)
The false hero (perceived as good character in beginning but emerges as evil)
The dispatcher (character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off)
The hero ( solves everything)

Todorov's narrative theory
Todorov's suggested that conventional narratives are structured in five stages;
1. A state of equilibrium at the outset
2. A disruption of the equilibrium by some action
3. A recognition that there has been a disruption
4.An attempt to repair the disruption
5. A reinstatement of equilibrium
Aristotle: the importance of the plot:
Aristotle believed that it is important that every film has a plot
It is important to arouse emotion from the audience.
evoking emotions through themes.
Barthes semiology within narrative:
Barthes believed that narrative can be defined by using the following things:
1. symbolic- connotation
2. semic- denotation
3. culture understanding- events which is recognised as being part of a culture
What narrative structure do thrillers tend to take and why?
I believe that thrillers take all the structures because all of the structures are important and they all have they're own role to do within the film. Therefore, without one structure the whole film could change and the audience wouldn't understand such as if there was no clear plot the audience wouldn't understand and this means they wouldn't enjoy the film.
Conclusion
In my own thriller that I will be doing I will use all the theories because by using all the theories my thriller will look more professional and the audience will; be able to understand my thriller because if I only use one or two or the theories I believe that my thriller video wouldn't look professional and the audience wouldn't have a clear understanding in my thriller video.

A good attempt here and all four theorist researched into. Clear that you understand that within thrillers, they tend to take on a few of these narrative ideas.
ReplyDeleteTo improve;
-where you have mentioned 'creating meaning in text', be clear to state how each of the four you discuss provide the audience with a certain element of understanding the narrative.
-apply some of Propps characters to thriller films, for example a hero is usually the protagonist
-can you think of thrillers clips to support your understand on Todorov and Aristotle?
-Barthes: what does connotation and connotation mean?
-look to analyse a scene like we did in class and apply the theories so you can see how you can, to a certain extent, apply all four.
-in your conclusion, be more specific. For example, I will use elements of Propps because I plan to use...characters. I will also utilise Todorov as my structure will...
I have improved on the points you have told me to improve on
ReplyDeleteYou have now included a conclusion, but the rest of the feedback I have provided doesn't seem to be there...
